xo CLASSCLASSCLASS

In the spirit of anti-war teach-ins, Allan Kaprow-esque happenings, and Judson Church era installations, participants of CLASSCLASSCLASS--teachers, students, mentors, and accompanists--will have the opportunity to publicly voice their opinions and experiences of dance education. Audience members will have the opportunity to participate in live manifesto readings, join in during simulated class exercises, and write down their hopes for the future of an emerging generation of students and teaching artists. The goal of this performance is to raise awareness of the importance of CLASSCLASSCLASS and its ensuing dialogues: how we can better understand who we are as dancers, performers and movement-based artists through a public, transparent, and mutual contemplation of how and what we teach and how and what we learn. The Great Community CLASS Manifesto is open and free to the public and they will be encouraged to participate in the event.

The Great Community CLASS Manifesto is made possible in part with public funds from the Manhattan Community Arts Fund, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.

DANCE PARTY WITH D.J. WHITE LICORICE TO FOLLOW (plus performances by CCC artists!!!!!)

Description: As working artists, education is a vital part of our careers. Many of us began teaching without any formal training in education; each one of us has learned to teach in a singular, and oftentimes, informal way. Teaching often serves as an extension of our creative interests, our rehearsal process, or our role in the support of a company/community of artists. How can we, then, as working artists and as active teachers, reflect on this process to identify the concrete elements--the people, the spaces, the classes, the moments, the words--that have influenced us the most? More importantly, how can our community collect these influences into a comprehensive pool of information that can serve as a practical guide for a younger generation of teachers?

BE THERE OR BE SUPER SQUARE.
