Class Description:

Dance Class
Level: for dancers with previous experience

The practice of this class is based on principles that emerge between Qi Gong, Release Technique, Ballet and spontaneous composition. We will work with internal structural awareness, organs and energetic connection and apply this inner structure to outer form as we move through space together. Using the logic of my own performative material and various contemporary and traditional methods of a dance class, we listen for the practice of doing that becomes the experience of dancing.

With live music by Bora Yoon.

Bio:

Melanie Maar is an Austrian- born choreograper, dancer and teacher. She works and lives in her Brooklyn space called The Loft.

Maar grew up in her mother’s studio for ballet and flamenco and started teaching modern dance there when she was seventeen. In NYC since 1996, she began studying Release Technique, spent two years at the Trisha Brown School and now has a continuous practice of Ballet with Janet Panetta, Qi Gong with Daria Fain and her own improvisational composition. Out of the years of studying and teaching dance and the principles of Ballet and Qi Gong she developed an integrative class of her way of making sense. Studies in Neuroscience and different Bodywork methods have influenced her way of seeing.

She is currently working on her next piece, a collaboration with musician Kenta Nagai that will premiere in New York in December 2010 at The Chocolate Factory.

Phenomenal Bodies was a commissioned work by Dance Theater Workshop in April 09. Other choreographies have been seen in New York, San Francisco, Vienna, Lisbon, Oslo and Berlin. Maar’s solo Off and On has toured various international Movement Disorder Congresses between 2005 and 2007. She was a Movement Research Artist-in-Residence in 2005/2006. As a dancer she has worked with New York choreographer Luciana Achugar for several years, as well as performed in works by RoseAnne Spradlin, Daria Fain, Levi Gonzalez, Kate Weare and Luis Lara Malvacias.
