Melanie Jones

Sunday, September 21; 1-4pm

Class Description
Constructive Laziness is an approach I’m developing in my own practice as a theater artist to inject an absurd amount of luxury and ease into preparation, creation and performance as an antidote to creative tension, pushing for product and overworking. This workshop will follow a very simple trajectory of warm-up, writing, movement generation, scene-making and performance with a focus on addressing anxiety, perfectionism and achievement-oriented creating. Through intentional ease and openness, we will work to stay in generative states of presence, intuition and conscious uncertainty rather than slipping into habitual or fear-based patterns. Participants should bring paper and pen.

Melanie Jones is a Canadian-born writer, performer and producer. She has created three solo theatre works including IN YOU. (AND YOU?), developed in collaboration with musician Pietro Amato in residence at BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange. Her second work, ENDURE: A RUN WOMAN SHOW was presented in London during the 2012 Olympic Games and as part of the 2013 Scotiabank Calgary Marathon. Jones was awarded 2012 NYIT (New York Innovative Theater) Awards for Solo Performance and Original Full-length Script and was shortlisted for the Brick Award at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Her theatrical work has been presented in four countries and her work as a writer has taken her to Paris, Zambia, India and Haiti. Author of three published nonfiction books, Jones also created more than 50 episodes for CityTV, 55 videos for the LEAP PROJECT, an online course for distressed youth, and more than 25 stories for WAVES OF CHANGE, a photo-documentary covering the world water crisis. She was a 2013 TEDxCalgary speaker and a part of the 2014 NYFA Immigrant Artist Program. She is a 2013-15 Artist In Residence at BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange where she is currently developing CANADIANS ARE MEAN, her fourth full-length theatre work, exploring immigration and impermanence.
