Class Description:

Intro to Flamenco
Level: Open to all

This intro to flamenco workshop is specifically tailored to give the student a taste of flamenco movement, music and rhythm. Lia Ochoa gently guides the students through the elements of flamenco dance, introducing them to footwork and hand and arm movement. There will be particular focus on rhythm (four and twelve beat), expression and flamenco vocabulary.

A New York City based flamenco dancer, Lia has performed with Andrea del Conte Danza Espana (soloist), Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana (soloist and dance captain), Pasion y Arte (soloist) and Oscar Valero’s Fuerza (company dancer). She has danced in venues such as the Discovery Theatre (Anchorage, Alaska), The Egg (Albany, NY), The Music Center at Strathmore (North Bethesda, Maryland), The New Jersey Performing Arts Center, the Connelly Theater (NY, NY) and the Joyce Theatre (NY, NY). Locally, Lia regularly performs in the tri-state tablao circuit (Pipa, Alegrias, “N”, Xunta) and has participated in community shows at the Brooklyn Arts Museum, the Hispanic Arts Society, the Battery Dance Festival, and others. She is co-founder of “Jaleo”, a collaborative flamenco ensemble which combines modern multimedia, live music, and dance.
