Workshop Description:

Self Scripting in Song
Level: Advanced Beginner

Multiple Obie and Bessie Award-winning performance artist Cynthia Hopkins will lead a workshop in self-scripting, guiding students through the process of mining their own experiences for material and then translating that material into performance. Students will be encouraged to use multiple tools of performance – including text, dance, costume, and especially music - but no musical skill is required to take the class, as music is a tool ANYONE can use. In particular, the workshop will encourage students to explore the use of song as a form of performative communication. This is a class in creative exploration, for those interested in devising their own music-performance works.

Cynthia Hopkins is the recipient of the 2007 Alpert Award in Theater, honoring her work as a writer, composer, performer, multi-instrumentalist, and theater artist. She is the co-founder and artistic director of the ensemble company Accinosco ( with whom she has created The Accidental Trilogy: Accidental Nostalgia (2005 Bessie Award for Creation); Must Don't Whip 'Um (2007 Bessie Award for Design); and The Success of Failure (or, The Failure of Success). These works feature the band Gloria Deluxe (, which Ms. Hopkins formed in 1999 and which has since produced seven full-length albums and performed at numerous venues in New York City and elsewhere. Ms. Hopkins is currently at work on a new piece titled The Truth: A Tragedy, commissioned by Les Subsistances in Lyons, France (where it is scheduled to premiere in March 2010) and Soho Rep in NYC (where you can check it out in May 2010).
